Reading Comprehension Strategies — Complete Guide

The matura exam tests your ability to understand written texts. Here are strategies for each type of reading task.

---

Types of Reading:

| Type | Description | When to use |
|------|-------------|-------------|
| Skimming | Reading quickly for the MAIN IDEA | First reading — get the general topic |
| Scanning | Searching for SPECIFIC information | Looking for names, dates, numbers |
| Intensive reading | Reading carefully for DETAIL | Answering specific questions |
| Inferring | Reading between the lines | Understanding implied meaning |

---

Step-by-Step Strategy:

Step 1: Read the questions FIRST (before the text)

  • This tells you WHAT to look for while reading.
  • Underline key words in each question.

Step 2: Skim the text (1-2 minutes)

  • Read the title, subtitles, first and last paragraphs.
  • Get the general idea — what is the text about?

Step 3: Read the text carefully

  • Match each question to the relevant part of the text.
  • Pay attention to topic sentences (usually the first sentence of each paragraph).

Step 4: Answer the questions

  • Go back to the text to verify your answers.
  • Be careful with distractors (wrong answers that seem right).

---

Common Matura Task Types:

1. Multiple Choice (Wybor wielokrotny)

Tips:

  • All answer options may be mentioned in the text — read carefully to find the ONE that correctly answers the question.
  • Eliminate obviously wrong answers first.
  • Look for synonyms and paraphrases — the correct answer rarely uses the exact same words as the text.
  • Watch out for "almost right" answers — they may be true in general but not according to the text.

Common traps:

  • An answer that is true in real life but NOT stated in the text.
  • An answer that uses words from the text but in a different context.
  • An answer that is too general or too specific.

2. True / False / Not Given

Tips:

  • TRUE: The text clearly states this information.
  • FALSE: The text clearly states the OPPOSITE.
  • NOT GIVEN: The text does NOT mention this at all — don't use your own knowledge!

Common trap: Confusing FALSE with NOT GIVEN.

  • If the text says nothing about a topic → NOT GIVEN (not false!)
  • If the text contradicts the statement → FALSE

3. Matching (Dopasowywanie)

Types: matching headings to paragraphs, matching people to opinions, matching sentences to gaps.

Tips:

  • Read all options before starting.
  • Start with the ones you are most sure about.
  • Cross out options as you use them.
  • For heading-matching: identify the MAIN IDEA of each paragraph (not just a detail).

4. Gap Fill (Uzupelnianie luk)

Tips:

  • Read the text with gaps first for general understanding.
  • Look at the sentences/words before and after the gap for clues.
  • Check grammar: does the sentence need a noun, verb, adjective, etc.?
  • Check coherence: linking words (however, therefore, moreover) can help you identify the logical flow.
  • After filling all gaps, read the complete text to check if it makes sense.

5. Open-Ended Questions (Pytania otwarte)

Tips:

  • Answer in your OWN words — do not copy sentences from the text.
  • Be concise and specific.
  • Make sure you actually answer the question asked.

Understanding Vocabulary in Context:

When you encounter an unknown word, DON'T panic. Use these strategies:

  • Look at the context: What is the sentence about? What words surround it?
  • Word parts: Does it have a prefix or suffix you recognize?
- un- = not (unhappy, unfair)
- re- = again (rewrite, rebuild)
- -ful = full of (beautiful, helpful)
- -less = without (careless, homeless)
- -ment = noun (development, agreement)
- -tion/-sion = noun (education, decision)
- -able/-ible = adjective (comfortable, visible)
- -ly = adverb (quickly, carefully)
  • Similar words: Does it look like a word in Polish or another language you know?
  • Positive or negative? Can you tell from the context if the word has a positive or negative connotation?

---

Key Reading Vocabulary:

Words that often appear in reading task instructions:

| English | Polish equivalent |
|---------|-------------------|
| according to the text | wedlug tekstu |

Podsumowanie — Lista kontrolna (Checklist):

Before submitting your reading answers:

  • Did you read the questions before the text?
  • Did you answer ALL questions?
  • Did you check your answers against the text?
  • For True/False/Not Given: did you distinguish between FALSE and NOT GIVEN?
  • For Multiple Choice: did you eliminate wrong answers?
  • For Gap Fill: does the completed text make logical and grammatical sense?
  • Did you write your answers in the correct place on the answer sheet?

Practice Tip:

Read English texts regularly — news articles (BBC, The Guardian), short stories, blog posts. Even reading for 15 minutes a day will significantly improve your reading speed, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
