Future Forms — Complete Guide

English has NO single "future tense." Instead, it uses several structures to talk about the future. Choosing the right one depends on the speaker's intention.

1. Will + Infinitive (Future Simple)

Structure:

Usage:

  • Threats and warnings: If you don't study, you will fail.
  • Facts about the future: The sun will rise at 6:12 tomorrow.

2. Be Going To + Infinitive

Structure:

3. Present Continuous for Future

Structure: S + am/is/are + V-ing (+ future time expression)

Usage:

  • Fixed arrangements with other people: I am meeting John for lunch tomorrow. (It's in my calendar.)
  • Definite personal plans: We are flying to Rome on Saturday.

Going to vs. Present Continuous for future:

  • Going to = intention (may not be organized yet): I am going to learn Spanish. (someday)
  • Present Continuous = arrangement (already organized): I am starting Spanish classes next Monday. (registered, paid)

4. Present Simple for Future

Structure: Regular Present Simple (+ future time expression)

Usage:

  • Timetables, schedules, programmes: The plane departs at 14:30.
  • Fixed events: School starts on September 1st.
  • After time conjunctions (when, before, after, until, as soon as): I'll call you when I arrive. (NOT: when I will arrive)

Structure: S + will + be + V-ing

Usage:

  • An action in progress at a specific future time: At 8 PM tomorrow, I will be watching a film.
  • An action that will happen as a matter of course: I will be seeing Tom tomorrow, so I can give him the message.
  • Polite inquiries: Will you be using the car tonight?
