Part 1: Articles (a/an, the, zero article)

A / AN β€” Indefinite Article

Use "a" before consonant sounds, "an" before vowel sounds:

  • a book, a car, a university (sounds like /juː/), a one-way street
  • an apple, an hour (silent h), an honest man, an umbrella

When to use A/AN:

  • First mention of something: I saw a dog in the park.
  • One of many (not specific): She's a teacher. / He's an engineer.
  • With singular countable nouns in general statements: A dog is a loyal animal.
  • With "what" in exclamations: What a beautiful day!
  • Meaning "per": twice a week, 60 km an hour

When to use THE:

  • Second mention (already known): I saw a dog. The dog was brown.
  • Unique things: the sun, the moon, the Earth, the Internet
  • Superlatives: the best student, the tallest building
  • Ordinal numbers: the first time, the second floor
  • With of-phrases: the capital of Poland, the beginning of the story
  • Musical instruments: She plays the piano.
  • Specific groups: the rich, the poor, the elderly, the British
  • Geographical names (see table below)
  • When both speaker and listener know which one: Close the door. (we both know which door)

  • Academic subjects: I study mathematics.
